Personal Injury Protection insurance, also known as PIP
, is an extension of car insurance that offers immediate compensation to cover medical expenses and lost wages following a car accident injury.
Automobile insurance companies are required to offer PIP coverage to their insured, unless said coverage is specifically declined in writing. Many people have PIP coverage included in their policy and don’t even know it.
PIP claims are generally capped at $2,500, $5,000, or $10,000, depending on the driver’s policy, and coverage is not limited to the driver. If you were injured as a passenger, you can absolutely file a PIP claim through the driver’s policy. Similarly, if you have PIP coverage on your own insurance policy but are injured in another person’s vehicle, you can file a PIP claim through your own insurance company.
Personal Injury Protection is considered no-fault coverage, which means that the insurance company will pay out regardless of who was at fault for the car accident.
PIP claims are useful because they provide money immediately, and generally cover all medical expenses, ambulance costs, and hospital bills. Additionally, PIP coverage can provide compensation for your lost wages if you were employed at the time of the accident.
How Do I Get My PIP?
If you have an attorney handling your injury claim, it’s highly advisable that you seek their professional assistance with regard to your PIP claim. While PIP claims are far less likely to be denied, it does happen. If your insurance company denies your claim, we strongly recommend speaking to a personal injury attorney
as soon as possible.
As with any personal injury claim, dealing with the insurance company can often be difficult to impossible. Not only can hiring an attorney take a huge weight off your shoulders, it can result in a much larger payout — and at no out of pocket cost to you.
